National and Local Coverage Determinations

Flash Code will alert you to any CPT or HCPCS code that is affected by a National Coverage Determination (NCD) or Local Medical Review Policy (LMRP). Just look at the right hand side of the code to see if the ABN button is active or inactive. ABN (Advanced Beneficiary Notification) indicates your obligation to notify medicare participants that a procedure or test you wish to perform may not be covered by medicare.

When you see that the ABN button is active, you should click on it to see more information:
1. Note the active ABN button. If there are ICD codes listed in the coverage determination, you will see the following screen. If there are coding guidelines, but no ICD codes listed, you will see a dialog box that states no ICD codes are listed, but allows access to the coverage policies for further review.
1. Note that the selected carrier should match with the practice region you wish to view coverage policies for. Click on the link to view the value list for all carriers.

2. The total number of codes listed in the policy are counted here. You can scroll through the list (it is sorted numerically).

3. If you have an ICD code in mind and just want to see if it is on the list. Just enter it here, then click the find button. Flash Code will search the Approved ICD List to see if there is a match in either the NCD or LMRP codes.

4. The View NCD and LMRP buttons will display the number of determination documents that apply to this code. Just click to view the text for the entire policy

5. You can print the ICDs, a great tool to pass out to providers for quick access to affected services. You can also print the Advanced Beneficiary Notification form for patient signature at the point of care.

6. Click the copy button to enter your desired code into the Flash Code internal clipboard. Note: All affected ICD codes are listed...even non-specific codes (green). Although green light codes are non-billable, they have been included in keeping with the NCD and LMRP text. If you select a green code, you will be reminded to select one of its subcategory codes.
