Navigation through the ICD Volume 3 Hospital Procedure Codes is identical to that of the ICD Volume 1 Diagnosis codes. First Click on the ICD Bookshelf in order to display the ICD volume 1 Chapter headings, plus the ICD Volume 3 and DRG links. These last two links are at the bottom of the page and are listed in red text, to differentiate them from the ICD Volume 1 Diagnosis Headings. For this Navigational example, we'll find Appendectomy codes. 1. Click on the 00...99 or the arrow to its left in order to display the ICD Volume 3 Headings 2. (You can also click on the 01...25 to see the DRG headings, but we're not going there...yet) |

1. Note that the figure below shows that you are now viewing ICD Vol 3 Chapter Headings and that there are 17 of them. 2. We are looking for Appendectomy codes, so logic tells us the Digestive System would be a good place to look. Click on the 42...54 link (or the Arrow to its left) to see these Chapter Subheadings. |

1. Now we can see the ICD Volume 3 Subheadings and there are 14 of those. 2. The code series for '47' lists the Operations on Appendix. All we need to do now is click on this number (47) (or the arrow next to it) so that we can see full descriptions for these hospital procedures. |

1. So here we are at the ICD code level. There is one two digit category code for Operations on the Appendix 2. Code number 47 is a Green Light code, which means it is not billable. Just click on the green light next to code 47 to go to the next junction of codes. 3. Note that Volume 3 codes have the Roman Numeral III displayed and Volume 1 codes have, you guessed it, a Roman Numeral I displayed next to them. This should help avoid confusion when you perform a free text search and find codes of both types. Flash Code will always display Volume I codes first, sorted in numerical order, followed by Volume 3 codes. 4. Any codes that have been revised, deleted, or added are noted with the following convention: -N05 (N=New, 05=2005) -R04 (R=Revised, 04=2004) -D03 (D=Deleted, 03=2003) And so forth. To see all of the code changes for the current year, just click on the 'R03' button. You will be taken to a page that allows you to display New, Revised and Deleted for the current year. |

1. We've arrived at the'4th digit level'. Code 47.2 is red, meaning no further code subclassifications exist for it. This code is billable. On the other hand, the other codes are all green, so you should click on their green light to view the '5th digit' codes associated with them. Note: I've put 4th digit and 5th digit codes in 'quotes'. This is because you can easily count the numbers to see that they are really 3 digits and 4 digits long. Flash Code currently keeps the 4th and 5th digit notation to mark codes after the decimal point, in keeping with the ICD Volume 3 codes. |
