Before you crack open our tutorial you might want to read up on these Fast Start tips. They can help you get started coding quickly and efficiently. Remember...we are always happy to provide FREE phone walk-throughs of Flash Code. Just call 800.711.7873 to set up a time.

 |
Navigate to any of the Book Chapter headings by clicking on the Book Title bar, or view sections of the book by clicking on the specific book spine you wish to view (Currently ICD CODES view) |
1. Forget about looking in the Indexes first (ICD, CPT, HCPCS) Of course this makes sense when you are looking up codes in the book and have to find the term alphabetically. BUT Flash Code can perform a numerical or word search in the CODES section of each book much faster.

 |
1. Put in the start of words, and includes serveral search terms to narrow your found set.
2. Search for any book notes, or any personal notes you include for your own reference. |
3. Start your search in the CODES Section and select the Enhanced Search check box. This tells Flash Code to search all of the terms in the numerical (CODES) section of the book, plus search for your search term in the Alpha index, table of Drugs and Chemicals, Neoplasms, and abbreviation table. Any cross referenced codes from these resources will be displayed.

Click on these to find the Chapter headings for the books, (CPT defaults to a display of the Surgical Headings) |
4. Remember that 10% of all ICD codes are listed as either "unspecified form of... " or "other unspecified..." If you can't find the code you want easily, try a hierarchical search as follows:
-Click the Title bar of the book you want to look in
-Find your way from Chapter headings>Subheadings>codes

5. When Navigating the ICD codes, Think like you do when you are driving a car. You keep passing through intersections that have green lights but stop at red lights. Green lights at the ICD code represent that there is an additional 'intersection' you need to get to. Go to the next digit subcategory in order to get more information from a fourth or fifth digit code. Green light codes are NOT BILLABLE
|
Note Extrinsic Asthma 493.0 is a green light code. You must go past this code to the next 'intersection' to find more specific codes. When the lights are red, you have reached the end of that code's path. Review the code and bill it if appropriate. Note that you can navigate in any direction by clicking on the H, S, 3, 4, or 5 buttons. |
 |
| There are a few codes that are specific at the 3 digit category level. For example, codes 460 and 462. |

6. Don't give up on text searches too easily. You can put in parts of a word or words in order to make searching easier. Try 'Chole' for cholecystitis,
'Cl fr rad' for close fracture radius, 'append' for appendicitis or appendectomy.
With a little practice should be able to find codes in a the blink of an eye. If you are having problems finding codes, or are taking longer than you would with a book, please call contact us so we can help you get the most out of Flash Code.
